a newLEAF this year

We try it every year.

This year is going to be better.

I'm going to exercise, lose weight, work harder, love better,

win a Pulitzer. . .

And here are the top ten most common resolutions according to a recent study by the University of Scranton:

1. Lose Weight

2. Getting Organized

3. Spend Less, Save More

4. Enjoy Life to the Fullest

5. Staying Fit and Healthy

6. Learn Something Exciting

7. Quit Smoking

8. Help Others in Their Dreams

9. Fall in Love

10. Spend More Time with Family

And as you can imagine, out of the 45% of Americans who usually make resolutions each year, 8% claim to be successful in achieving them.

We're masters of good intentions.

Our goals are sound, but something's missing.

We just can't seem to follow through and stick to it.

What if this year really could be different?

I don't have some magic tisane or trendy pill,

but what I am offering is a philosophy that I think can help us achieve our goals.

It's called new LEAF.

You only have to remember four things:

L - Lifestyle

E - Environment

A - Attitude

F - Future

Lifestyle

We can't reach lasting change until we overhaul our lifestyle.

Want to lose weight, you can't just hit the gym a couple of times a week. Change has to become a part of life. Envision the future you want, then work to make your lifestyle (the normal, mundane, everyday part of you) match that vision.

Environment

We can only advance as far as our surroundings allow. You want to be more disciplined and detailed? Clean your desk, get rid of clutter. You want to give your kids more of your focus? Put your phone out of reach, eat meals together. We need to be more intentional about our environment.

Some quiet, slowness and peace wouldn't be amiss.

Attitude

I do not buy into the "just believe" balderdash, the "you can do anything you put your mind to" lie. Achieving our dreams requires the aligning of a lot of factors, many of them quite out of our control. I can look in the mirror everyday and chant "I am so handsome," and, well . . . you can look at my homepage pic and see that I'm not God's gift to GQ.

We may not be the masters of our own destinies, but I do think we can only reach our goals if we have a proper frame of mind. I firmly believe in positive, optimistic thinking. Not lying to ourselves but cultivating a clear, realistic, informed mind. Please dream and dream big. But pursue realistically with an empowered attitude.

Future

Pick the goal, envision the future you want, then work out a

lifestyle, environment and attitude to achieve it.

This entire Leaflet blog is about bettering ourselves on all fronts.

Join me and let's get a newLEAF movement started!

Please leave some comments, especially how you're going to make this year better than ever.

Happy New Year! And here's to some serious newLEAF-ing!
